Ted Talk - Philosophy for Children Lesson
A philosophical discussion about the earth and how humans have to adapt to ensure we can continue our lives sustainably. Titled 'The Earth is Full', it offers a great starting point for a Philosophy for Children (P4C) lesson. Aimed at higher Key Stage 2 level, this encourages children to think about the impact human's have on the environment and each other. It offers opportunity for children to self-reflect and question some of the choices they make. Practitioners should allow session to be child-led, but should support the conversation where required.

NASA'S Earth Day 2020 video
To further develop children's understanding of this discussion, this P4C lesson could be incorporated weekly, encouraging children to reflect on the previous weeks discussion before discussing further. Using media isn't a necessary starting point for these lessons, however it is a fantastic way to fully engage children at the start of the lesson. It provides a definite starting point for conversation. Teachers can use different media to ensure a variety of views are portrayed each week. The example below would be a good starting point for the next P4C lesson. It is titled 'Earth Day 2020' and has been produced by NASA to show how advances in technology are used to better inform us of changes to the planet. Starting questions could be as simple as 'Why do we need to have an earth day'. The role of the teacher is always to facilitate learning and encourage children to be inquisitive, allowing the conversation to organically develop.

Curriculum for Wales 2022
This term long project will facilitate development and learning, fulfilling the outcomes desired by the new curriculum. Giving the children a starting point of research, our planet, and having weekly child-led discussions will allow children to incorporate the Curriculum for Wales 2022 four purposes. Throughout the project, teachers can facilitate the children to become ambitious capable learners, enterprising creative contributors, healthy confident individuals and ethical informed citizens. This project will allow teachers to ensure they incorporate elements of these four purposes, reinforcing the backbone to the new curriculum. Curriculum for Wales 2022 also outlines 5 'statements of what matters' per AoLE. These are specific learning objectives that individual curriculum's should attain. The learning outcomes for humanities are:
Enquiry, exploration and investigation inspire curiosity about the world, its past, present and future.
Events and human experiences are complex, and are perceived, interpreted and represented in different ways.
Our natural world is diverse and dynamic, influenced by processes and human actions.
Human societies are complex and diverse, and shaped by human actions and beliefs.
Informed, self-aware citizens engage with the challenges and opportunities that face humanity, and are able to take considered and ethical action.
From engaging in this project, children will achieve these learning objectives, whilst incorporating the curriculums ethos of underpinning children's learning and development through the four purposes. A multitude of opportunity for cross-curricular learning will also be utilsed, with literacy, numeracy and digital competency used as a vehicle to support development. Teachers should also encourage children to develop other AoLE's during this project. For example, drawing a picture would incorporate expressive arts, or further investigation into global warming could incorporate science and technology.
Over the course of the term, converse with peers to understand the implications humans have on our planet.
